Why Giving Matters: Biblical Truths and Real-World Evidence

Why I Believe Tithing Changes Both the Heart and the Life

For years, I’ve been a firm believer in tithing — giving the first 10% of my earnings back to God. Not because it’s convenient, not because it “fits the budget,” but because Scripture calls us to it and because I’ve seen the blessings that flow from obedience.

What’s fascinating is that modern research backs up what the Bible has taught for thousands of years: generous people live healthier, happier, more fulfilled lives. Giving isn’t just a command — it’s a pathway to joy, peace, and spiritual maturity.

Here are three biblical verses that ground the importance of giving, followed by two scientific studies that show how generosity literally transforms your life.

📖 1. Malachi 3:10 — The Only Place God Says “Test Me”

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse… and see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”Malachi 3:10

This is one of the boldest statements in Scripture. God doesn’t just ask for the tithe — He invites us to test His faithfulness.
The promise is unmistakable:

  • Provision
  • Blessing
  • Security
  • God’s active involvement in your needs

Tithing is an act of trust. God responds to that trust in supernatural ways.

📖 2. Proverbs 11:24–25 — Generosity Multiplies, Stinginess Shrinks

“One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. The generous will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”Proverbs 11:24–25

These verses describe a principle that plays out in everyday life:
Generous people flourish because giving expands the heart, the mindset, and the capacity to receive.

Withholding doesn’t make us safer — it actually increases anxiety and scarcity. Generosity breaks that cycle and aligns us with God’s design.

📖 3. 2 Corinthians 9:6–7 — Give Joyfully, Not Reluctantly

“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully… for God loves a cheerful giver.”2 Corinthians 9:6–7

Paul reminds us that giving isn’t just about amounts — it’s about attitude.
A cheerful giver:

  • Understands God’s ownership
  • Finds joy in blessing others
  • Experiences spiritual freedom
  • Reaps spiritual and emotional benefits

Giving is a reflection of the heart — a heart aligned with God becomes a generous heart.

🧠 What Secular Studies Say About Giving

Even outside of faith traditions, research consistently shows that generosity benefits your mental, emotional, and physical health. Here are two well-known studies that support what Scripture has always taught.

📚 Study #1: University of Notre Dame — “The Science of Generosity Project”

A multi-year research initiative at Notre Dame examined thousands of people across different ages and backgrounds. Their findings were clear:

  • Generous people experience greater happiness
  • Giving increases purpose, reduces depression, and strengthens relationships
  • Regular financial giving boosts overall life satisfaction

They concluded that generosity is so powerful, it shapes a person’s identity and long-term wellbeing.

Translation in biblical terms:
“The generous will be refreshed.” (Proverbs 11:25)

📚 Study #2: Harvard Business School — Giving Increases Happiness

In a widely cited study published in Science, researchers discovered that people who spend money on others experience more sustained happiness than people who spend money on themselves.

Key findings:

  • Giving activates the brain’s “reward center”
  • The emotional boost is stronger and longer-lasting than self-spending
  • Even small acts of generosity significantly improve well-being
  • The positive effect is universal — across countries, ages, and income levels

This study literally shows that we are designed for generosity.
Science calls it “prosocial spending.” Scripture calls it “cheerful giving.”

🌱 Final Thought: God Commands Giving Because Giving Changes Us

Tithing isn’t about God needing our money — He owns everything already.
Tithing is about:

  • Trust
  • Obedience
  • Transformation
  • Freedom from fear
  • Participation in God’s work

The Bible says giving blesses us.
Science says giving blesses us.
My personal life says giving blesses us.

When we give, something happens inside of us:

We loosen our grip on money…
and strengthen our grip on God.
